St. Michael's Mount

This tidal island in Mount's Bay--connected to the mainland only at lowtide--is known in Cornish as "Carrack Looz en Cooz"--"the grey rock in the wood". There is, in fact, a submerged forest in the bay, drowned probably sometime since the last ice age, though possibly after Britain was re-inhabited.
